Qur’an burning – Protester shot dead

Fsarzneh Mansoori, an Afghan parliamentary candidate, kisses a copy of the Koran at a mosque before her speech during her campaign in Herat, western Afghanistan September 7, 2010. Taliban threats, shuttered polling centres and warnings of widespread fraud are clouding hopes for Afghanistan's Sept. 18 parliamentary election, a key test of an already fragile democracy, observers have warned. We must choose not to isolate…

TODAY’S VERSE. “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” Hebrews 3:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT. God made us for fellowship. It is wired into our brain. We need God and other people. Relationships play a pivotal role in our Christianity. We must attune ourselves to God and to each other. If we don’t, then we isolate. And when we isolate, we start > more.

The modesty of wisdom

The tale is told of how Socrates was confronted by a citizen of Athens who posed a question for him. “Socrates,” the man asked, “Why does the Oracle at Delphi describe you as the wisest man in the world?”

The answer he got was something of a surprise : “I can only think that it is because I know nothing.” Then Socrates added, “But I have opinions on nearly everything.” > more.

The Truth is out there … really

Man is a truth-seeking creature. How’s that for a statement of belief? And it is a statement of belief ; for there is no proof of it. And yet I have come across very few people who do not believe it, either explicitly or implicitly. But what is Truth?

How often do we seriously consider that question? For doesn’t it so often lead to a debate which has all the appearances of a mere fog of words?

So, one way or another, we tend to escape the fog and develop a handy argument which puts Truth into some kind of framework ; and from there we can explore further. For me, such a handy framework came from one of my unofficial mentors, the physicist AN Whitehead. He put it something like this: > more.

Defense Minister: Israel needs to recognize the occupation must end

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visits Israel

Israel must recognize that the world will not put up with decades more of Israeli rule over the Palestinian people, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in unusually frank remarks Monday.

Barak’s comments came against the backdrop of severe friction between the U.S. and Israel’s hawkish government over an impasse in peacemaking.

“The world isn’t willing to accept – and we won’t change that in 2010 – the expectation that Israel will rule another people for decades more,” he said. “It’s something that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.” > more.

A Resurrection That Matters

If we are completely saved from our sins through the Cross, what’s the point of the empty tomb ?

In the spring of my senior year in college, I was deeply immersed in the rhythms of Christian life. I was a leader in InterVarsity, participated regularly in a Bible study with other seminary-bound friends, set my Sundays aside for worship and rest, and read more than my fair share of extracurricular Christian books. As Easter approached, I began rehearsing the importance of Jesus’ resurrection. I knew that for Paul and the other New Testament writers, there could be no Christianity without it. Yet one day as I was walking back to my dorm, it dawned on me that the gospel as I understood it had no need for Jesus to be raised from the dead. > more.

Homeward bound

Im sitting in the railway station
Got a ticket for my destination
On a tour of one-night stands
My suitcase and guitar in hand
And evry stop was neatly planned
For a poet and a one-man band
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thoughts escaping
Home where my musics playing
Home where my love lies waiting

A Christian Work Ethic – A Word for the Ambitious

Its easy for me to lose perspective in my daily tasks. There are two sides to this.

On one side, I can get lost in meaningless distractions, prohibiting me from being diligent or productive. I am a slow writer and reader, so this can be extremely crippling for my productivity. Or on the other side, I get lost in my ambition, prohibiting me from being a good father, husband, or friend. I over-estimate the importance of my tasks, make an idol of my accomplishments and self-worth, and forget that God is the one who holds the universe together.
Below are a few things for the ambitious, who tend to make an idol of work, accomplishments, and their self-worth, to keep in mind: > more.

Jesus Christ Superstar (Videos)

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera that became a musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It highlights the political and interpersonal struggles of Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The rock opera is based on St John’s Gospel account of the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparation for Jesus’ and his followers’ arrival in Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. Twentieth-century attitudes and sensibilities as well as contemporary slang pervade the lyrics and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the political depiction of the events. Stage and film productions accordingly feature many intentional anachronisms.

God is good. Always.

God is good. God is always good. God is good in every situation. In our blessing, He is good. In our unfaithfulness, He is yet good. In whatever comes upon us, God is good. Whether our trials are the making of others or of our own bad choices, God is good.

So, because He is good, He can be trusted. He can be trusted absolutely. He never fails, and will never fail us. God never forsakes us, though we are found faithless. > more.

Then, my friend says, there are “different kinds of Mormons.” This past week I talked to a friend whom I haven’t seen since 2008. I love this friend — we struggled through some very trying times together, and we learned much about ourselves and one another during the years when we […]

It seems that most people are fully occupied in mind and body for at least six full days each week. Up early and late to bed, multi-tasking all the way through. Then comes Sunday.
