British Jews favour ‘two-state solution’ in Israel

Survey finds UK’s Jewish community supports Israel’s right to defend itself but should now help create Palestinian state.

The majority of British Jews favour a “two-state solution” to the situation in Israel, and more than half would support negotiations with Hamas, according to research published today.

The study carried out by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR) found Jews in Britain strongly identify with and support Israel, with nine out of 10 having visited the country. > more.

New wine in old church buildings

All over the country small churches are growing while the large buildings that once housed them decay.

This week saw the publication of the first national survey of England’s places of worship. The English Heritage survey, which documents the state of 14,500 church buildings from Gothic Anglican confections to nonconformist chapels and Quaker meeting houses, finds that less than half are in fair or good condition, while ten per cent are at risk of dereliction. > more.

Even atheists should welcome Benedict’s visit

Despite his uncuddly image, the pope has a message for believers and deniers alike.

You know the world’s natural order has settled down again when the Free Church of Scotland has voiced its disapproval of a papal visitation.

Several months have elapsed since it was announced that Benedict XVI would be embarking on a pilgrimage to Britain, yet in vain have I waited for them to denounce this man of perdition. There hasn’t even been a reference to the whore of Rome, nor hint of Beelzebub’s Footstool. In the name of the half-shut tabernacle door, what has been afflicting the Free Kirk, my favourite other Christian denomination? > more.

Pope Benedict XVI helds the weekly general audience-Vatican

It seems that there are Mormons, and then there are MORMONS, or so I’ve heard. Then, my friend says, there are “different kinds of Mormons.” This past week I talked to a friend whom I haven’t seen since 2008. I love this friend — we struggled through some very trying times together, and we learned much about ourselves and one another during the years when we […]
  • Sacred Space
It seems that most people are fully occupied in mind and body for at least six full days each week. Up early and late to bed, multi-tasking all the way through. Then comes Sunday. A day historically and culturally set aside for rest. For many, it is a day of spiritual rest. For others, it is a day to walk the dog, spend time at the beach, wake up late and si […]
