Why ?

I saw a Tweet on Twitter yesterday by @worldprayr that serves as a launching point for where I’m going with today’s post.

It was: “You will never be in a situation where God is not in control, that God hasn’t authorized & God is big enough to handle it!”

I’ve thought about some things since I… > more.

The Spiritual Side of Sustainability

After writing my vision of sustainability I have started to think about sustainability as a religious revival of sorts.

There have been many religious movements in the past that I feel share a lot with the current sustainability and social justice movements. I’m by no means the first to make this connection. Paul Hawken comes to mind. > more.

I’m Going to Rwanda

Well, tonight at about 9:00 I’ll be boarding a flight at DFW to head out for a two-week-long trip to Kigali, Rwanda.

I’m super pumped, despite the fact that I have not yet started to pack… We’ll see how that goes. In Kigali I will be a part of a five person team doing some research for Tom’s Shoes; I’ll also be a part of a larger team studying microfinance and economic development in Africa. Tom’s is teaming up with a group called Bridge2Rwanda to serve the Rwandan people. They just recently (about a month ago) distributed about 1,000 shoes. Here’s a link that tells about what they did: > more.

210 Million Reasons to Adopt

Haiti’s devastating quake reminds us that orphans matter to God.

Two years ago, a Christian couple from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, fell in love with an abandoned toddler, born with a disability and living in an orphanage in rural Haiti. Already adoptive parents of a Liberian child, Katy and Josh Manges decided to adopt the toddler, Malachi, who has a treatable bone disorder.

Then the January 12 earthquake that crushed so much of Port-au-Prince, costing an estimated 230,000 lives, put the prayerful plans of the Manges family in limbo. It also laid bare before the world how badly orphans and vulnerable children may be treated when they get caught up in red tape, corruption, and political correctness. > more.

Hunger Isn’t History

hunger-mrkris-flThe world produces more food than ever. So why do nearly a billion people still not have enough to eat ?On the road toward fulfilling the Bono-endorsed slogan, “Make Poverty History,” the world has hit an unexpected speed bump: prosperity. India‘s expanding auto industry puts 4,300 new cars a day on already-crowded streets. Oil-wealthy Russia has doubled its meat consumption since 2000. Brazil’s sizzling economy is growing its use of steel at a faster rate (over 20 percent this year alone) than nearly any other nation. China has increased its consumption of eggs by a factor of ten in recent years.” > more.

Cry for help from Orissa (India)

Here is a mail that reached me this morning and that made me very concerned. How would I be in such a situation? Even so brave as my friend or helpless and desperate. The measure of people bringing together, to give help to Orissa, is a courageous measure of my friend in such a situation in which some 100 people were killed and in the meantime 13,000 Christians are living in refugee camps and many other Christians are submerged. Many have fled into the jungle.

It seems that there are Mormons, and then there are MORMONS, or so I’ve heard. Then, my friend says, there are “different kinds of Mormons.” This past week I talked to a friend whom I haven’t seen since 2008. I love this friend — we struggled through some very trying times together, and we learned much about ourselves and one another during the years when we […]
  • Sacred Space
It seems that most people are fully occupied in mind and body for at least six full days each week. Up early and late to bed, multi-tasking all the way through. Then comes Sunday. A day historically and culturally set aside for rest. For many, it is a day of spiritual rest. For others, it is a day to walk the dog, spend time at the beach, wake up late and si […]
