Burka ban: protection or violation the civil liberties ?

The French National Assembly last week approved by a vote of 355 to 1 a measure which would ban women from wearing the burka and the niqab in public places.

France is home to an estimated 5 million Muslims, or 6 percent of the population. An estimated 2,000 French Muslims wear the niqab. The less-restricted hijab, or headscarf, was banned from public schools in 2004. > more.

German development minister said Israel has made a ‘large foreign policy mistake’ by barring him from visiting the Gaza Strip.

Germany sharply criticized Israel on Sunday for denying its development minister entry to the Gaza Strip to visit a humanitarian project co-funded by Berlin.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said he regretted Israel’s decision, while Development Minister Dirk Niebel – who is on a four-day trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories — said it was “a big diplomatic mistake”. > more.

As the Utah firing squad did its job, two women embraced – both nieces, one of a victim, the other of the killer.

In a darkened car park high on a hill overlooking the sparkling nightscape of Salt Lake City, two young women are clinging to each other and weeping. Their embrace conveys more than a thousand speeches.

Israel to Ease Gaza Land Blockade

JERUSALEM — Israel announced Thursday that it would “liberalize” its 3-year-old blockade of Gaza by allowing more goods to enter by land, but it made no offer to lift its naval embargo.

The move, coming weeks after Israeli commandos killed nine people aboard an aid flotilla bound for Gaza, seemed designed to quell international protest over the violence. Israel says its soldiers were attacked before they opened fire in self-defense on pro-Palestinianactivists aboard the ship. > more.

After similar, astonishing reports in the USA, it appears that The Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) is about to discuss allowing doctors to perform a ‘ritual nick’ on a young girl’s genitals in order to satisfy some cultures’ needs – in place of ritual genital mutilation.

It seems that there are Mormons, and then there are MORMONS, or so I’ve heard. Then, my friend says, there are “different kinds of Mormons.” This past week I talked to a friend whom I haven’t seen since 2008. I love this friend — we struggled through some very trying times together, and we learned much about ourselves and one another during the years when we […]

It seems that most people are fully occupied in mind and body for at least six full days each week. Up early and late to bed, multi-tasking all the way through. Then comes Sunday. A day historically and culturally set aside for rest. For many, it is a day of spiritual rest. For others, it is a day to walk the dog, spend time at the beach, wake up late and si […]
